Life Below the Surface

This Subnautica-inspired cake was designed as a glimpse into another world – strange, submerged and completely edible.

I built the scene from individually sculpted sea plants, textured underwater forms, shells and a detailed creature emerging from the edible seabed. The tall blue elements and trailing greenery create the sense of looking through a living underwater habitat rather than at decorations arranged on a cake.

The bubbles were the most technically demanding part. They were not solid balls made in a simple spherical mould. Each one was formed as an exceptionally thin, hollow shell of isomalt, then held within hand-shaped green tendrils so the bubbles appear suspended beneath the water, drifting among the seaweed. Keeping the shells light, transparent and intact through assembly required patience and precision.

Every visible element was edible. From the creature moving through the sand to the hollow bubbles held in the underwater growth, this cake was made to reward a closer look from every angle.
