A personal commission for Yael
Stained Glass, Made Edible
Some cakes begin with a theme; this one began with another artist’s work. Yael creates stained-glass windows, so I recreated one of her own designs as a completely edible centrepiece.
The artwork was constructed piece by piece in isomalt, with each section individually coloured to match the original glass as closely as possible. Even the two brilliant red hearts were made from isomalt, giving them the depth and shine of real glass. A hand-shaped sugar flower completed the composition.
Beneath the artwork was one of my personal favourites: a triple-chocolate mousse cake, built around layers of chocolate flavour and contrasting textures.
This was a particularly time-intensive creation. Reproducing someone else’s artwork faithfully demanded patient colour matching, careful assembly and the same respect for detail that would go into the original stained-glass piece.
